Senior Paper
Syphilis is a complex sexually transmitted infections (STI) caused by bacterium as stated by family planning.com. Syphilis is passed from person to person through sexual intercourse and contact with a syphilis sore. The sores are located mainly on the genital, vagina, anus, or in the rectum. Syphilis can be very dangerous among pregnant woman and in some cases possibly cause death to unborn child. When a person has unprotected sex they are at risk to any disease/infection such as syphilis. Any person who has sex with a person infected with syphilis can get the disease. Symptoms can appear from 10 to 90 days after a person has become infected, but usually with 3 to 4 weeks. The symptoms are often not noticeable or some consider them to be minor. When being exposed to open sores you can also catch a disease/infection like syphilis there is also needles that can lead to an infection developing.
Signs and symptoms
Primary stage a sore will appear. This sore is called a Chancre. The Chancre is usually firm, round, small, and pain session. A Chancre shows up where the bacteria has entered the body this usually last 1 to 5 weeks an Will heal on its own. When the Chancre disappears a rash will develop. Now the rash will start to appear on both the hands and feet. Other symptoms are fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, and patchy hair. During the last stage may include poor muscle movement, gradual blindness, and dementia (mental illness) as stated on Familyplanning.com/pdf.
This is a picture of the rash after the chancre has disappeared
Pregnant woman with syphilis can pass the infection onto their unborn baby. Babies born with the infection can grow to have many health problems. When pregnant and with syphilis this may lead to premature delivery, low birth weight , and even having a stillborn ( a baby born dead ) . The baby can be born without signs of the infection and if they are not treated with in a week of birth the baby can develop serious health problems such as cataracts, deafness, or seizure, and they can even die.
Case Study
Syphilis is a bacteria past down through sexual intercourse according to Webster Dictionary. Syphilis goes back decades starting in Tuskegee were there was an all black community that was victims to syphilis testing according to Allan M. Brandt. In 1932 in the U.S health service did an experiment in Alabama to determine the course of untreated latent Syphilis in black males. The article " Racism and Research: The Case of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study" written by Mr. Brandt and in the article Brandt states that 400 syphitic men as well as 200 uninfected men served as controls. During this experiment was only issued every 4-6 year through the 1960s.
In the early 1950s men did not receive therapy. " The USPHS actually sought to prevent treatment." Leading into the late 60s more like 1969 The Center For Disease Control wanted to continue the study. Now some men had died and the center still continued to do testing. In August during the early 90s a panel described who would write the yearly report. In fact the panel found the study to had been "ethically unjustified." Therefore ending the study. It was founded that this study was taking three years after a grant from the Julius Rosewald fund supported the USPHS studies in the rural south. Granted the USPHS were trying to explore a mass treatment for syphilis among the black community in Macon County, Alabama. By not knowing the effects of the so call treatment they were trying to give to people they scientist end up making things a lot more complicated and but not telling the people the seriousness of what was going on they spread the infection throughout the little small community. Out of all the men that were tested on only four survived but couldn’t live to see this day and tell us about their life with syphilis and how everything came about.
What is the treatment for Syphilis?
One dose of penicillin will cure a person who has had syphilis less than a year. People born with syphilis need daily penicillin treatment for 10 days after born. There are no home remedies or drug that can cure the infection. If someone has had Syphilis for more then a year there are more doses needed. http://www.familyplanning.org/pdf/Syphilis.pdf
How common is Syphilis?
The Center of Disease Control (CDC) estimates that annually 55,400 in the United States get this (STI). There were only 46,042-reported cases that were new in 2011. Out of the new cases only 13,970 of them were in their early stage. In 2011 72% of the new cases occurred among men who had sex with other men. There were also 360 reports of children with syphilis in 2011. It is also known for Syphilis to be linked to HIV. Oral, anal, vaginal Syphilis sores make it easier for the infection to turn in to something more. A person is 2 to 5 more times likely to get HIV if exposed to Syphilis. This is making it more risky for people to have sexual intercourse. Syphilis was not common until 2004. Making it a Hugh problem in some part of the united states.
This graph Rates of Primary and Secondary Syphilis per 100.000 population by Age and Gender: Philadelphia. 2011 was put up on the City of Philadelphia website 04/30/2012 and in the graph it shows that Syphilis is high in males then in females and it’s high in the age group of 25-29 years old males. Proving that Syphilis is showing up in the gay community.
In the graph above called Early Latent Syphilis per 100.000 Population by Age and Gender: Philadelphia. 2006 show that in 2006 syphilis was a real big deal and that even though it was high in females it still was higher in males and the highest group to have Syphilis in both males and females were the 20-25 year olds they showed to have a high percentage of people carrying the infection/disease around. This graph was uploaded on to the City of Philadelphia website in 02/19/10.
Throughout all the charts and graphs on the City of Philadelphia website there was something that was so common and that was that Syphilis was higher in males then females. This is not saying that woman didn’t have the infection it just that it was higher in men. Now this show that the unsure male will unwilling give it to his spouse which may be a woman now not knowing that he has this infection he goes back and sleeps with another male who doesn’t have this infection. That just creating a cycle and spreading the infection throughout they gay community but also in all communities.
Lit Review
http://www.CDC.gov/STD/syphilis was by the Center of Disease Control and I used this website to help me get my facts on syphilis and just to get deep in side of the syphilis infection. http://www.familyplannning.org/pdf/Syphilis.pdf is one of the main sites I use it by family planning and it was just a cool fact sheet that gave me great information about Syphilis. http://cid.oxfordjournals.org helps me understand what Syphilis was and the history behind it. http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/artivle also helps me understand the history of syphilis by putting it in a created way.
Solution
There are many solutions to getting the number of syphilis cases down. People can get a check up from there local doctors twice a month. There can be more sex education classes in schools. Parents should be able to tell their children about the dangers of having unprotected sex. Make a PSA about the dangers of Syphilis. Talk to the people who are having unprotected sex and make them aware. letting people know the facts of what will become of them it they don’t protect themselves when having sexual intercourse with a person
Conclusion
A lot of people will be infected with syphilis if people stop having unprotected sex. If women do not protect themselves they end up putting their bodies, health, and unborn children at risk. Some men should protect themselves when it comes to whom they’re sleeping with in the gay community men need to protect their selves. If not thousands will be infected with the syphilis infection. A person with syphilis showed be aware if pregnant the risk that they are taking and people in general show know that Syphilis is not dead but is slowly on the rise again.
